The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) is observing its 46th Realisation Month from March 17 to April 17, themed “Realize to Save the Indigenous People of Manipur.” This initiative focuses on raising awareness about the protection of indigenous identity, demographic changes, and the influx of outsiders into the state. As part of the month-long observance, AMSU will organize various activities including seminars, public meetings, campaigns, competitions, and rallies throughout Manipur.
During the launch, AMSU President Lukram Malangba highlighted the historical movements of 1980 and 1994, where the union led protests against the influx of outsiders, a continuing concern. He paid tribute to student leaders Potshangbam Premananda and Huidrom Lokendra, who were killed during the “Go Back Foreigners” movement in 1980. In their honor, AMSU observes April 17 as “Realisation Day,” culminating the observance with a public gathering and commemorative events to affirm the commitment to protect the rights and identity of the indigenous people.
The Realisation Day commemorates the sacrifices made during the 1980 uprising, which aimed to establish regulations on migrant entry into the state. AMSU has a renewed pledge to combat policies that threaten the rights, cultures, traditions, heritages, and languages of the region’s indigenous populace.
