The Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) held a protest in Chennai on Tuesday against Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) decision to lay off 12,000 employees, primarily at mid and senior levels. UNITE claimed the total number of job losses could potentially reach between 30,000 and 40,000. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Unionise to stop layoffs” and labeled company executives with terms like “Chief of Cruelty” and “Chief of Corporate Greed.” The union alleged that TCS is replacing experienced professionals with freshers earning 80–85% less. UNITE criticized the government’s inaction and called for retraining instead of layoffs. Despite the claims, TCS denied reports of 30,000 job cuts, stating the actual impact is limited to 2% of its workforce and dismissing the higher figures as misleading. UNITE highlighted that the company, with ₹2.55 lakh crore in revenue, a 24.3% operating profit margin, and ₹45,588 crore in dividends, is cutting jobs purely for profit. They condemned the move as an attack on job security, especially targeting senior staff, and demanded justice.
